VIDEO: CHRIS LANE VS. MIKE WELCH @ DISORDERLY CONDUCT II
March 29, 2009 by searstapper
Bantamweight Title fight between champion Chris Lane and challenger Mike Welch. Fight took place during Disorderly Conduct II at the Dupage Expo Center. The event was the second MMA offering from Mayhem Promotions, an up and coming player in the Chicagoland MMA landscape. Lane trains at Xayasouk Muay Thai Gym in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Welch fights for the Portage, Indiana based Team Colon. This match featured lots of exciting technical grappling action, as Lane pitted his BJJ skills against Welch’s ground and pound attack.

Terrible stoppage in the first round for hitting the back of the head…The angle of the video doesnt show if he actually hit him or not, but there was no warning to the top guy to stop…The ref stops the fight and gives up the top fighters dominate position…Also very unprofessional of the ref to tell the kid ” i fu*kin told you 3 times to stop hitting the back of the head”….Overall bad decesion…The fighter in the green would have tko’d the guy in that position but ends up losing due to a bad call….
Honestly, the wrong fighters hand was raised in the end. Mike obviousily dominated cris and was the overaall better performer. i too would like to add that the ref was completely unorganized and very unprofessional. the fight should have been stopped in the first round due to obvious domination. I think the two of these fighters should give it a go again…this time with a more experienced ref. It was definately a BAD CALL!!
Where did mayhem find that ref…off the streets? Was it neccessary to inappropriately push Welch off to the side and curse at him? These tapes should be looked at again due to an unfair call. Mayhem should have interveined on this call. Welch needs a rematch!!
Actually the ref you are referring to is Todd Frederickson. He has reffed in the UFC and I am almost certain he was a MMA fighter as well.
Hypothetically speaking, coming from a referee with such prestigious experience; should sure as hect know his and/or her rules and regulations. I have come to speculate that the referee Mr. Todd Frederickson has violated the rule regarding, “No, using abusive language in the ring/fenced area”. I do not mean to question his credentials, but his behavior in the ring that night was completely irrational. He should resign and/or be terminated.
That ref has been in the ufc thats crazy ive followed it for many years never seen him once ! UFC must have let him go because he isnt that good thats why he does amature fights now! Great job ref you suck hey would you cuss at mike like that outside the cage i dont think so
During my reveiw of this video, it came to my attention that the referree abused his authoritity in more than one way. He spoke to Mike in a cursing manner and warns him for the punishing to the back of the head, however during the video it does not seem to be mentioned prior to that moment. It is at this time that the referree allows Mike’s opponent to regain control. Mike then loses due to a bad call, when it obviosusly should have been over in the first round. Mike deserves a rematch!
He was a referee during UFC 90 which took place here in Chicago.
Due to this being an amateur show we can’t really hear the ref because there are no mics in the ring. However, the ref did state that he told Mike three times not to hit the back of the head. Furthermore, the action should not have stopped in the first round because Lane was clearly defending himself intelligently. If you looked closely, Mike’s shots were not making contact with any part of Lane’s body other than his gloves meaning Lane was effectively blocking those shots.
Really don’t blame the ref because in the end it was Mike Welch who defeated Mike Welch by getting overconfident.
Just to clear up a few issues..Mayhem does not pick the ref’s for the fights. Ref’s are hired by Combat Consulting the sanctioning body.Everyone wants a rematch, won’t happen because Chris Lane is turning pro next month(May) thus cannot fight for us to defend his belt in July..Mike has already committed to Mayhem that he WILL be on the Disorderly Conduct 3 card.. Stay tuned to http://www.mayhempromotions.com to get the date and view the fight card. Joe Albin has put together one of the best cards the chicagoland has ever seen. .MTC,Hackney,Team Colon just to name a few will be there..Thanks for the support, see you in July…
Thanks Jeff. We are really looking forward to DC III. As for the ref situation, I think (hope?) most fans realize that a premature stoppage or bad call by a ref can happen anywhere and everywhere. We see it all the time.
Best of luck to Chris Lane, and we’re glad to hear Mike will be back for DC III!

Thanks again!
Man the way you guys keep saying Mike it makes it sound like you know him. If that’s the case then you lose all credibility and have a bias opinion. Refs are always at blame for loses, to the person who loses. I’m sure if you would of asked Lanes if they would of stopped the fight he would of said they stopped it premature. Don’t bash a guy for doing his job. I’m sure he know the rules better than most and if you don’t like it than maybe you should go get a licence and do some reffing yourself
I would like to see the fight when they both go pro though. It would be a good rematch since Welch was dominating the fight, but the fight was 3 rounds not a round and a half
yes we do know welch,as well as half of team colon and other local fighters. that is what we call a MMA fan. i dont remember bashing chris lane, just the ref. we just was going for welch to win and thought it was poor judging of the ref, not chris. so on that note GOOD LUCK TO CHRIS ON GOING PRO.
I think overall it was a good match..maybe the ref did stop that fight inappropriatley but overall I think it was needed becasue there were numerous shots to the back of the head..I actually know Chris personally and tonight IS his Pro debut..Welch was a good fighter but in MMA anthing can happen and he got submitted..Good fight tho.
GOOD LUCK TONIGHT CHRIS
Mike is an awesome fighter and it made no sense that the ref didnt stop the fight in the first round. The ref also shouldnt have sweared at Mike. I would love to see them fight again with a ref that knows what he is doing.
Mike will be fighting at Disorderly Conduct III at the DuPage Expo Center in St. Charles, Illinois on July 18th, 2009. Check out our events page for more info!
