Gracie Barra is expanding again, this time to the Northwest suburb of Schaumburg. The grand opening is set for Sunday, August 11, and it looks to be a mixture of an open house, block party and BJJ seminar.

“We’re kind of calling it ‘The Taste of Gracie Barra,’ said Peter Prince, program director for Gracie Barra Schaumburg.

“We’re going to have a Brazilian chef making traditional-style Brazilian barbecue, just like they do at Fogo de Chao, and he’ll also be making burgers and hot dogs.

“We just want it to be a casual, family-style event where people from the neighborhood, local businesses and our friends from other Gracie Barra schools can come out for a relaxing day with friends and family.”

Prince said that the open house, which runs from noon to 6pm, will feature plenty of demonstrations and activities throughout the day, including a black belt demonstration with Professor Sergio.

“We want to do a women’s self-defense demonstration, an anti-bullying talk and maybe even a capoeira demonstration.”

The school’s instruction will be led by Professor Sergio, who received his black belt from the legendary Osvaldo Alves. Sergio came to the United States last year to compete and earned silver medals at the both the US Open and the World Championships. Professor Sergio will lead a black belt demonstration during the open house.

People that stop by the open house will also be able to join in some raffles, which will feature gift certificates from local businesses.

The school is offering a special introductory package for the first 50 people to sign up. For $99, new students will receive a Gracie Barra Gi, their first month of training, a special private training class.

You can sign up at the grand opening, visit the Gracie Barra Schaumburg website or call 773.377.JITZ (5489).
