UFC Saturday: Emmett vs. Stephens

This weekend the UFC is heading to Amway Centre in Florida where UFC on Fox 28 takes place. There are a few highlight events on the cards but of course on everyone’s mind is the main event match between veteran Jeremy Stephens and young upstart Josh Emmett.

Emmett has been undefeated since he dropped to featherweight in UFC but it’s undeniable that his deciding knockout against Ricardo Lama has left even more of an impression. Emmett has in fact made two knockouts on his last two fights but Stephens’ intensity and ferocity on top of his experience is a potent combination.

Even with his experience, he has never encountered the fighter who holds the record for most knockdowns in a single match, and this shows incredible endurance. Emmett achieved this feat at UFC Fight Night 118 when he squared off against Felipe Arantes.

A Challenging Matchup

Emmett could potentially have an edge on Stephens since this will be Stephens 2nd fight in almost a month. His last match was a win against Doo Ho Choi at UFC Fight Night 124 but he has barely had time to fully recover and prepare for this match.

Calling Stephens a veteran is in fact an understatement as this match will mark his 28th UFC appearance, the highest amount of appearances on UFC, second only to Michael Bisping at 29. He also holds a second distinction as the man with the most knockdowns, second only to Anderson Silva at 18 but tied with Donald Cerrone with 17.

He does however have the highest amount of knockdowns in the featherweight division which he joined in 2013. Stephens certainly has the pedigree to come out on top but Emmett certainly is hungrier and doesn’t have the low win loss record that Stephens’ long career has given him.

The Other Headliners

The co-headliner of the evening is the near legendary Jessica Andrade facing Tecia Torres who is coming fresh off a three fight winning streak, and is one online betting NZ fans should watch. Torres’ incredible defence which sees her nix a little over 70% of her opponent’s strikes could be Andrade’s downfall.

Torres will have her work cut out for her however as Andrade just happens to be one of the most aggressive attackers in the division. She regularly lands over 200 blows per match making her the ideal opponents for Torre’s counter attacks.
