So, You Wanna Get into Boxing? Here Are Four Solid Ways to Enhance Your Workout

If you’re like most people, it’s difficult to find time and motivation to exercise. Even if you make it all the way to the gym, now you have to come up with some form of workout, every time?!

Not to mention, running on a treadmill by yourself for 30 minutes is BORING (we’re all thinking it).  It’s a big undertaking, especially if you’re just starting out. The good news is, sports like boxing take away the isolation and the need to plan a workout.

Here are some ways you can get into boxing, and boxing-like exercises to enhance your workout strategy.

  1. Different Types of Boxing

Boxing is a very unique sport that can incorporate a lot of different types of movements. It mainly involves punches to the body or head to knock your opponent out. Similar to boxing, there is also MMA, kickboxing, and different styles of boxing. MMA involves several different fighting techniques and utilizes your whole body (and mind). Kickboxing incorporates, you guessed it, kicks.

  1. Finding a Gym

Not all gyms are built the same, and it’s important to find a gym that matches your speed and personality. Every coach is different and approaches the sport with its own unique twist. Most gyms will allow you to have a few trial sessions, in the beginning, to see if the gym is a good fit. Take advantage of these opportunities and try out several gyms, as gym memberships can be pricey.

Make sure to also consider the proximity of the gym. How likely are you to really pack your entire bag for the day at 6 am to make it to that gym that’s 30 minutes away? We’ll give you a hint: not likely.

Most gym locations can be found via Google or Facebook.

  1. Get Your Gloves

There are hundreds of different gloves on the market for boxing and MMA-style sports, as can be seen via a site like PunchPrime.com. The first step to choosing a pair of gloves is choosing what style of the sport you want to pursue, as this will dictate what kind of glove you want to buy. However, there are some parameters that can be used across the board.

You want gloves that will be sturdy, protect your hands and your wrists, and will last you a long time. For durability and longevity, leather is great.

A pair of gloves that have a built-in wrap around the wrist will help protect it from damage if you happen to throw a punch wrong. As far as size: you don’t want them too tight or too loose. Make sure you can move your hands around, but that they’re not swimming inside them.

Stick to Your Schedule

The best way to ensure that you’ll stick to the sport or gym that you choose is by incorporating it into your schedule. Pick consistent days and time that you can go to the gym and stick to those (as best you can) every week.

Schedule your classes a week out. It’s easier to talk yourself out of going to the gym if you have to find time for it on the day-of.

Benefits of Boxing

Boxing incorporates so much more of your life than simply going to the gym. It not only provides a full-body workout class that engages your mind and your muscles, but it also removes the pressure of having to figure out what to do at the gym every time. That’s almost as stressful as planning meals every day! In addition, there is also a solid sense of community in smaller gyms that you don’t get elsewhere.

More than just workouts, you end up finding encouragement and friendship to keep you accountable and help you keep to your goals.
