What’s Next for Adesanya and Vettori After UFC 263 Match?

on

UFC 263 wraps with the reigning champion surviving the title challenge. Israel Adesanya has proven his class once again and outmatched Marvin Vettori to clutch his middleweight title on the main event. Meanwhile, Vettori failed to fulfill his goal to become the first Italian UFC champion after taking yet another defeat in this rematch.

The victory does not come with many surprises. The odds are mainly against Vettori in the lead-up to the game. In the latest odds before the fight, Adesanya was the favorite among sport betting bookmakers priced up to -280. Meanwhile, they price Vettori around +220 as the underdog in the fight.

What Had Happened in the Match?

The Last StyleBender Adesanya (21-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) triumphed with a unanimous decision victory over Vettori (17-4-1 MMA, 7-3-1 UFC) at Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona, on June 12, 2021. The fight marked the Nigerian-born Kiwi’s first attempt at 185lbs after his futile attempt to unite his middleweight title with the light-heavyweight title. The victory also marks his third consecutive title defense and fair bounce-back from his first defeat against Jan Blachowicz back in March.

Vettori had the closest fight against Adesanya than anyone in the middleweight division has ever been in 2018. The enraged Vettori pressured Adesanya for the entire match and made the precision striking strategy almost ineffective. The New Zealander fighter only managed to steal the win by a split decision victory. However, the June 12 rematch showcased a completely different fight. The champ swept clean all the rounds in this five-round game and won 50-45.

Adesanya took control early in the game with ferocious leg kicks to the Italian’s dominant right legs. Vettori resorted mostly to takedowns by attempting to grapple Adesanya anytime he got the chance. Takedowns might be the challenger’s best shot at winning; but, the champ had anticipated it well and made any attempt to take him down futile.

What’s Next for Adesanya & Vettori?

Both fighters waste no time and already have set their sight forward after the rematch. Vettori targets former Adesanya’s opponent in UFC 253, Brazilian fighter Paulo “Borrachinha” Costa.

Meanwhile, Adesanya calls for a match against New Zealand-born Australian fighter Robert Whittaker. It will be a rematch for the champ after defeating Whittaker by TKO at UFC 243. UFC president Dana White has assured that the company has worked to set the fights right immediately.

Betting Trends for Adesanya & Vettori

With Adesanya’s returning to the top-form in the middleweight division, it is easy to see him as a favorite amongst pundits and bookmakers for his upcoming bouts, especially when he gets the match-up with Whittaker. However, it will be enticing to see how the champ works out his KO percentage or if he can repeat his KO victory in October 2019.

Meanwhile, Vettori might struggle to get the upper hand if he gets the match against Paulo Costa. The Italian Dream’s 17 wins and four losses record might not be as convincing as Costa’s 13 wins and one loss, in which his only loss came from Adesanya.
