MIGUEL TORRES WINS AT WEC 51
October 1, 2010 by Matt
Miguel Torres got some time off from his new day job as Ecko’s “Chief Executive Enforcer” to get back in the cage at WEC 51 in Colorado.
Miguel unveiled some new things on Thursday night. He is now fighting out of Montreal and Firas Zahabi’s Tri-Star gym, and he had a brand new stance. Some things were still like the old Miguel. “His mullet looks good,” Stephan Bonnar said. And like so many times in the past, Miguel Torres won. And he did it in convincing fashion.
After a feeling out process in the first, Miguel landed a nice combo that made Valencia cover up and retreat. Miguel worked him up against the cage. After a brief stoppage for an unintentional low blow to Valencia, Torres got back to work. Another combo dropped Valencia and Torres pounced, almost finishing Valencia with a barrage of ground and pound. Valencia escaped as the bell sounded.
A minute into round 2 Torres connected with a big right and quickly followed that with 2 head kicks — a right and a left — that sent Valencia to the ground.Valencia was able to get up but Torres quickly landed a knee that put him right back down. Torres worked some ground and pound methodically before taking Valencia’s back and securing a body triangle. From there he locked in a rear naked choke and Valencia tapped at 2:35.
Torres collected $10k and “Submission of the Night” honors. He also improved to 37-3.

JAMIE VARNER TALKS DONALD CERRONE
September 29, 2010 by Matt
HDNet’s Ron Kluck recently did a tremendous interview with WEC fighter Jamie Varner as he prepares for his upcoming fight against Donald Cerrone on September 30th at WEC 51.
The quote from Varner about Donald Cerrone: “His mouth wrote a check that his ass can’t cash” is hilarious. But how Varner talks about his instructors and their passion and how they inspired him to become what he is today is even better.

BART PALASZEWSKI VS. KAMAL SHALORUS MOVED TO WEC 53
September 15, 2010 by Matt

Bart Palaszewski has been on quite a streak in the WEC, but he’ll have to wait just a bit longer for his next fight. His fight with Kamal Shalorus is still a go, but instead of WEC 52 it will now happen at WEC 53.
Shalorus has re-injured the hand that he hurt against former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner, so Palaszewski will meet Shalorus at WEC 53 on December 16 instead.
Palaszewski was on the televised card at WEC 50 and looked amazing in his battle with Zach Micklewright. Bartimus was trading with the taller, Miletich fighter, but started winning most of the exchanges toward the end of the 1st round. In the 2nd round, Bart rocked him with a flurry of punches up against the cage, landed a vicious body kick and then finished him with a right hook at :31. Bart is now 4-2 in the WEC with 4 straight wins.

9.15 UFC Fight Night 22 The premiere of the new season of “The Ultimate Fighter” will air right after this event, which features Nate Marquardt vs. Rousimar Palhares as the main event. Huge fight for Marquardt if he wants back into the title hunt at middleweight.

9.18 KSW14: Judgment Day World’s strongest man Mariusz Pudzianowski will fight Eric “Butterbean” Esch in Poland.
9.25 UFC 119: Mir vs. Cro Cop There will still be a Nogueira on the card; but it’s Rogerio, not Rodrigo. Rogerio will battle up and comer Ryan Bader, while Cro Cop fills in for the injured Nogueira to fight Frank Mir. Mir needs a win to stay relevant in the UFC heavyweight division. He’s lost 2 of his last 3 fights. One more and it’s to the back of the line for a title shot.
9.25 Dream 16 Kazushi Sakuraba gets a fight with Jason “Mayhem” Miller. New Bellator champ Joe Warren fights Michihiro Omigawa, and Gegard Mousasi battles Tatsuya Mizuno.
9.30 WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan Amazingly stacked card for this event. Miguel Torres vs. Charlie Valencia, Donald Cerrone vs. Jamie Varner, Leonard Garcia vs. Mark Hominick, Chris Horodecki vs. Ed Ratcliff and “The Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung vs. George Roop.
WEC: ALDO VS. GAMBURYAN TRAILER
September 3, 2010 by Matt
Here’s the promo for WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan, an incredibly stacked card.
This card is absolutely loaded. So much so that we don’t even see Miguel Torres in the promo, nor do they mention former champ Mike Brown, the Mark Hominick vs. Leonard Garcia fight, the Chris Horodecki vs. Ed Ratcliff fight or The Korean Zombie. Yes — WEC 51 is stacked to the hilt.
LAMAS, PALASZEWSKI WIN AT WEC 50
They took different paths, but local fighters Ricardo “The Bully” Lamas and Bart Palaszewski both won at WEC 50.
Palaszewski was on the televised card and looked amazing in his battle with Zach Micklewright.
Top Notch fighter Ricardo Lamas needed all 3 rounds, but won a unanimous decision over Dave Jansen. Lamas had several sub catches in the fight and won 29-28 on all the judges cards. The picture above tells how much of a war this was, as does this photo of Lamas’ shorts after the fight.
Lamas improved to 9-1 with the win, his 3rd straight. He is now 4-1 in the WEC, his only loss coming to Danny Castillo at WEC 42.
