Chicago Well-Repped at XFC 15
November 9, 2011 by Matt
XFC 15 will take place on December 2nd in sunny Florida, but the event will feature some of Chicago’s finest fighters.
The ageless wonder that is Shonie Carter will be back in the cage taking on Ryan Thomas. Carter got back in the win column with a unanimous decision win over Landon Showalter at Rumble on the Ridge XX in October, and he’ll hop right back into battle with just six weeks in between fights.
Thomas is a tough draw for Carter. He is a UFC vet that recently fought Jonatas Novaes in the seminfinal round of the Combat USA Illinois state tourney. Thomas has faced Novaes, Judo Jim Wallhead, Ben Saunders, Matt Brown and Ben Askren — twice. This will be Thomas’ first fight since his loss to Novaes.
Novaes will also fight on the card. A member of Team Brasa and a BJJ instructor under Comprido at FLO MMA in Palatine, Novaes’ star is on the rise. He has won four straight fights, including the Illinois state championship at 170 lbs, when he broke WEC vet Sherron “Rob Roy” Legget’s arm to take the title.
Novaes will fight Eric Reynolds, who fights out of American Top Team. Reynolds has fought in Bellator and has faced tough opponents like Jorge Masvidal and Eddie Alvarez. This will be Reynolds’ first fight in almost a year.
Felice “L’il Bulldog” Herrig will be back in action looking for her third straight win. We last saw Herrig at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates notching a unanimous decision win over Nicdali Rivera-Calanoc at XFO 39. Fans were treated to a great fight between the two, and Rivera-Calanoc’s “YES!!” walk-in was awesome.
Herrig will face Carla Esparza, who has fought some of the well-known names in women’s MMA. Esparza has fought Jessica Aguilar and Megumi Fujii in Bellator, and has a win over Karina Hallaran.

Comprido: Eddie Bravo is an Idiot
Our friends at MMA Nuts interviewed FLO MMA/Team Brasa’s Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros, who had some harsh words for 10th Planet’s Eddie Bravo.
Comprido has always taken a strong anti-drug stance, and he continues to do that here, criticizing Eddie Bravo for promoting the use of marijuana as a performance enhancer for Jiu Jitsu.

Jonatas Novaes Breaks Sherron Leggett’s Arm to Win Title
July 25, 2011 by Matt
FLO MMA instructor and Team Brasa fighter Jonatas Novaes faced WEC vet Sherron “Rob Roy” Leggett in the lightweight championship of the Combat USA Illinois vs. Wisconsin finals. Novaes needed little time to secure the win via submission.
Congrats to Novaes on winning the championship, as well as to his coach Rodrigo ‘Comprido’ Medeiros and his manager Joe Fortis of Title Shot Management. Best wishes to Leggett on a full and speedy recovery.

JONATAS NOVAES: ILLINOIS STATE CHAMP
May 17, 2011 by Matt
Congrats to FLO MMA’s Jonatas Novaes for becoming the Illinois state champion in the 155 lb. division of the Combat USA Fighting Championship.
Novaes defeated American Top Team and former UFC vet Ryan Thomas via armbar at 4:08 of the first round to take the title. Now, Novaes will fight Sherron Leggett on June 16th in Osh Kosh for the Wisconsin vs. Illinois title.
MMA Nuts made the trip to Racine for the event, and had this rundown of the Novaes/Thomas fight:
“Novaes opened the round with a vicious leg kick before taking Thomas down near his corner against the cage. Thomas attempts a very tight armbar but Noaves is able to escape with a slam winding up back in Thomas’ rubber guard. Novaes’ cornerman Comprido shouts instructions in Portuguese to create space and he obliges landing a vicious bomb to the forehead of Thomas that stuns him momentarily. Novaes passes guard as Thomas attempts to escape to standing but leaves an opportunity for the Brazilian Black Belt to sink in a very deep armbar. It’s tight, but Thomas refuses to tap even though it looks like his arm is about to snap in half. Novaes readjusts sinking the submission even tighter and cranks back on the arm forcing Thomas to submit at 4:08 of Round 1.”
Novaes moved to 8-3 with the win, and now has three straight wins since his Strikeforce loss to Christian Uflacker here in Chicago in 2009.
COMPRIDO VISITS MMA NUTS
May 13, 2011 by Matt
Ingo Weigold and Matt Griffith from MMA Nuts sat down at FLO MMA with Comprido for a long form interview. He talks about why and how he got started in Jiu-Jitsu, his thoughts on Brock Lesnar and Eddie Bravo and more.
COMPRIDO: BROCK HAS NOTHING TO PROVE
After we interviewed UFC middleweight Demian Maia at FLO MMA, we spent some time with the man Maia came to see: Rodrigo “Comprido” Medeiros. Comprido is the BJJ instructor at FLO, 7-time World BJJ champion and you can see him on the current season of “The Ultimate Fighter” as a member of Brock Lesnar’s coaching staff.
He spoke to us about why Brock doesn’t have anything to prove to anyone, shared in detail his thoughts on steroids and told us about his TUF experience.
