John Hosman

John “The Goat” Hosman was getting ready to defend his bantamweight title at the upcoming XFO “Outdoor War” event.   But then his coach, Alex Trujillo(head of Midwest Training Center) got a call from the WEC to fight on this weekend’s card.  Hosman’s answer was simple, “We said we were in.”  So instead of fighting in the XFO event which is scheduled for August 15, he will fight this Sunday on the undercard of Torres vs Bowles.  He replaces Kenji Osawa, who suffered a foot injury, and will take on Brazailian Jiu Jitus dynamo Rani Yahya.

I’m stoked,” says the Evanston native.  “My first fight in the WEC and I get Yahya. This is a huge step up for me and I’m ready to take full advantage of it.”

Hosman makes a strong case for the top 135 pound fighter competing in the Chicagoland area.  In addition to the XFO belt he is also the current titleholder in the Hammond, Indiana based C3 promotion.  He just fought two weekends ago at the event Fight Club One, a new local promotion which took place in West suburban Addison.  “The Goat” defeated Billy Jochum by arm bar in the first round.

Chicago’s MMA reporter L.J. Tabano caught up with MTC fighter as he prepared for the fight.

L.J.:  How will you approach fighting Yahya and his submission skills?
John:  I’ve been lucky enough to see a lot of video on him, and my teammate Chase Beebe had a five round battle with him. So I’ve seen a lot of what he likes to do. I know he is real tough on the ground but I think I have a good game plan for the fight.
L.J.:  Where does this opportunity rank among your career accomplishments?
John:  This is the opportunity I’ve been waiting for since I started fighting. As far as I’m concerned this is the biggest fight of my life.
L.J.:  How does you feel about being on a card with so much Chicago area flavor?   There’s you, Miguel Torres, Jeff Curran and Ricardo Lamas all fighting Sunday night.
John: I love the fact that the Chicago area is being represented very well. I think we have been over looked for a while and its time for people to know the windy city is an MMA power house. Then to be on the card with guys like Torres, Curran, and Lamas means a lot to me. They’re some of the best fighters around. So its an honor to be there with them.
Hosman is riding a five-fight winning streak but faces one of the best BJJ practioners fighting MMA right now in Yahya.  The former ADCC champion’s last fight was here in Chicago at WEC 40 where he subbed Chesterton’s Eddie Wineland with a rear naked choke.
Chicago’s MMA video blogger Felice Herrig is a teammate of Hosman’s at MTC.  He wanted to share with everyone how great he thinks she is.  “She’s a rock star and big things are going to happen for her. She’s always busting her butt so I hope you guys are taking care of here over there!”
Since the Hosman vs Yahya fight is on the undercard there’s no guarantee it will be televised during the ive broadcast.  WEC 42: Torres vs Bowles airs this Sunday August 9 on Versus at 8pm CST.
