The first-ever “Roll For a Cause” submission grappling/BJJ open was held on July 28th, and it was an all-around win according to Jillian Kreiman, founder and promoter of the event.

“I want to say a big thank you to everyone whether they donated, volunteered, refereed, coached, or competed to make “Roll for a Cause” a great success,” said Kreiman.

The event raised $6,548 directly for Make-A-Wish and another $1,806 in sponsor money to cover costs. Total money raised for this event was $8,354.

“This was kind of a small, first run, never-heard-of-before tournament and everyone just really had a great attitude,” said Kreiman. “We had some Wisconsin guys and some Indiana guys that showed up, which is pretty cool for a smaller tournament.”

UFC veterans Eric “Red” Schafer and Shonie “Mr. International” Carter had planned to no-gi grapple in the highlight event at this tournament. But Carter still wanted to compete so he decided to do an absolute division at the event.

When learning who his opponent would be in the tournament, one competitor said, “You told me I was going against an advanced guy. You didn’t say it was Eric freakin’ Schafer!”

Will “Roll for a Cause” become an annual event?  “That is my goal,” said Kreiman. “I will be hosting it next year. I’m really appreciative of everyone that stepped up and hopefully we’ll be able to do this again — bigger and better.”
