Leon Edwards Now #4 in Stacked UFC Welterweight Division

UFC: dos Anjos vs. Edwards

Special to Chicago’s MMA

Leon Edwards, more commonly known as “Rocky,” is a British mixed martial artist who is currently competing as a welterweight in the UFC Schedule.

Rocky was born in Kingston, Jamaica and has a pro record of 18-3-0. After the UFC on ESPN 4 event on July 20th, 2019, the Ultimate Fighting Championship upgraded its official rankings and Edwards shot up to #4. He remained there after the Pettis/Diaz fight.

Latest UFC rankings for the welterweight division are:

Champion: Kamaru Usman

  1. 2

Leon Edwards and Rafael dos Anjos competed in a fight that was pivotal for a spot in the welterweight rankings, with both fighters looking for a title shot. Edwards defeated Rafael dos Anjos via unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 49-46).

Edwards was the one who secured the first takedown of the fight and he ended up with three takedowns that night, while dos Anjos went 0-5 on takedown attempts. Edwards also outstruck the former UFC champion in the decisive win.

UFC News points out that Edwards is now on an eight-fight winning streak of 8 matches.

The victory helped Leon break into the top-five and reach number four in the UFC rankings. This should also help Edwards secure his Jorge Masvidal grudge match, as “Gamebred” is now sitting at number three, just one spot above Leon.

Edwards claimed that Masvidal, who he clashed with backstage at UFC London, is “a journeyman of the game” and is nothing compared to his last opponent RDA, and that Jorge just comes up with excuse after excuse every time he proposes a fight.

Edwards also helped write an article for ESPN, before his clash with RDA and talked about the hardships he dealt with growing up in Jamaica.

He’s wrong when he says Masvidal is a journeyman, but whatever it takes to sell the fight. We hope to see Masvidal vs. Edwards soon!
