Two belts, heavyweight and lightweight, were supposed to be on the line at Fightcard Entertainment’s “Ruthless ’09” event in Cicero. Instead fans only saw half of the card fight and just one title fight.
Promoters Brian Angelo and Nilo Soto salvaged what they could of the original advertised matches to put on a shortened version or “Ruthless ’09.” Trouble first appeared when lightweight challenger LaQuinn Swift did not show up for the weigh in, which took place Friday. More problems came about on Saturday when several fighters we not cleared by the sanctioning body, Combat Consulting, to participate. Current lightweight champion Guillermo Serment was among those Combat Consulting did not allow to fight. Chicago’s MMA was told the reason the fighters were not cleared was either the prefight medical was not up to standard, or other official requirements by the state were not met.
Just six fights took place, one of which included the heavyweight championship. Top Notch/Jeff Neal/Carlson Gracie fighter Jeff Burdorf became FCE’s first ever heavyweight champion after finishing off Xtreme Couture fighter Adam Medansky early in the third round with ground and pound. For the most part the first two rounds were spent on the feet. Video of the title fight coming shortly.

just another example of promotors not being on top of things and the fans of chicagoland mma seeing garbage.
It is unfortunate that things are really tough for mma fighters in Illinois. However, not all promoters are unprepared or have shows fall apart.

The fights falling apart had nothing to do with the promoters. Its an amature organization. Its the responsibility of the fighters to get their blood work done, show up to weigh-ins and not fight pro under a slightly different name. For anyone that showed up ti the fight, they were very entertained by the fights that took place, and the show was run very well.

Mr. fightfan (if that is your real name?), you along with this website seem to be extremely biased towards certain promotions. While I’m sure that you haven’t been to a Mayhem show yet (wink, wink 😉 ) if its the same show I’m thinking of (the one in St. Charles last month) don’t waste your time. Now I went to this fight card show last week and the mayhem show last month. Friends are fighters and there team fights like every week and my dumb groupie ass drops $30 at pretty much all these shows just to get in. Now that Mayhem show last month was absolute garbage, while I’ve seen worse shows it was by no means the best show in the state. The place was too hot, the fights were all lame and uneven and I only remember 1 of the fights going the distance and that fight wasn’t even close, total domination. Now as I said it wasn’t the worst show I have ever seen (even though it was pretty bad) but the guys who run it are dicks. My friend fought on the card and was promised a certain amount of money up front and a certain amount if he won. Well he won and he still hasn’t been paid, what type of shit is that? They keep telling him that they are waiting for credit card purchases to come back, total BS. If you can’t pay for a show upfront and you have to depend on that shows profits to pay the bills you shouldn’t be hosting events. Now can’t really say if this is true or not but another team told me that the promoters dad was walking around acting like an ass. Making fun of the losers and even telling one fighter in the back that he was too ugly to be a fighter. Now if that is true, regardless of how funny that sounds its not really that professional. Now on to the fight card show last week. while that wasn’t the best show I’ve every seen, it was the best show I ever paid $15 dollars to see. I don’t know about you but $15 bucks to see some fights don’t care how shitty they are, it sounds like a good deal to me. And that’s the great part of it, there was only like six fights but they were all bad ass. The only part I didn’t like were the rappers that came out during the break, I hope those guys were related to the promoters, that’s the only reason I could come up with for letting them preform because they where horrible. But the fights were great. One of the guys from the team was supposed to fight but apparently his opponent didn’t take one of the required blood test (???), or he didn’t have the results with him or something like that. Now I have agree with Jeff on this one (by the way great fight big guy) the fighter needs to be responsible for his part and get the right test done, make sure he’s there on time and do the things he needs to do in order to fight. All a promoter needs to do is get the fighters, make great, even and exciting fights, and put asses in the seats which they did. They packed the house with only six fights there was at least twice as many people there then there was at the mayhem show. Not trying to be a dick but I just call it as I see it. Next time fight card has a $15 dollar show I’ll be there whether my guys are fighting or not, can’t say the same about the guys in st. charles.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and I like to hear what everyone thought about our events, good or bad. It helps us know what to do to make them better so that everyone has a good time. As far as “ThatIndianaBoy” comment, “My friend fought on the card and was promised a certain amount of money up front and a certain amount if he won. Well he won and he still hasn’t been paid…” I NEVER promise any fighter $ to show and win. Our show was an amateur event and as amatuers, they do not get paid to show and win. I think you are mistaken on that. If you check our website, or I can just tell you, we had 5 fights get out of the first round with 2 of those going to decision. Not bad given that mma is the kind of sport where anything can happen. We did have our fair share of quickies, but that’s going to happen at any show.
